Multi-disciplinary Study on Islam and Cultural Diversity in Southeast Asia (the 3rd Term)—Dynamics of Conict and Co-existenceProject term: Apr 2017 – Mar 2020; Number of participants: 27Coordinator: TOMIZAWA, Hisao (University of Shizuoka)The general goal of this project is to conduct comparative eld research on the dynamics of conicts and peaceful co-existence in inter- and intra-religious/ethnic relationships in various Southeast Asian countries. In some countries in Southeast Asia, several examples of ethno- and religious conflicts have involved both Muslim and non-Muslim populations, such as the conflict in the southern Philippines, where the Muslim minority has fought for independence or substantial autonomy for several decades. On the other end of the spectrum, there is relatively stable and peaceful co-existence of different ethnic or religious groups in Malaysia and Singapore. In this study, we would like to re-examine the socio-historical backgrounds and political conditions leading to these differing outcomes of inter- (and/or intra-) ethno-religious contacts from a comparative perspective. For this purpose, we will invite researchers from different disciplinary backgrounds, such as anthropology, history, political science, area studies, and Islamic studies, to contribute to the study. We will organize various workshops and/or conferences in the Kota Kinabalu Liaison Ofce (KKLO) in Malaysia. This is a continuing project (the 3rd term) of the “Multi-disciplinary Study on Islam and Cultural Diversity in Southeast Asia (the Second Term: AY 2014–2016)”.Life as Dynamism in Search of a Methodological Connection between Aect, Thinking, and ArtProject term: Apr 2017 – Mar 2020; Number of participants: 17Coordinator: NISHII, Ryoko (ILCAA)Modern anthropology was established on eldwork. However, at the end of the 20th century, ethnographies based on fieldwork were criticized as resulting from the epistemological exploitation of peripheral societies. Since then, and into the 21st century, the “ontological turn,” which shifted the focus from questions of knowledge and epistemology towards those of ontology, has impacted anthropology. This joint research project transcends conventional knowledge, collapses the divisions between epistemology and ontology, and explores new approaches to the actuality of life. Methodologies from various disciplines including anthropology, cognitive science, philosophy, and art are connected in the search for alternative fundamental ideas in anthropology such as “culture” and “society,” which emphasize the wholeness of objects. In philosophy, dynamism is “the system, theory, or doctrine which seeks to explain the phenomena of the universe by some immanent force or energy.” The concept of “life as dynamism” is thus applied to “the immanent force of life”; it affects the undercurrent in experience or reality.
