In 1997 fiscal year, the attached Information Resources Center was established for the formation of information resources of the languages and cultures in Asia and Africa which utilize the remarkable technical innovation of an information network, and the further development as an Inter-University Institute is aimed at. In addition, for the period of 2001-05, a 5-year program for setting up a Core Research Center called "Grammatological Informatics based on Corpora of Asian Scripts (GICAS)" was newly formed this year to take up the role of leadership in the field of study of Asian and African languages and cultures.
