Gujart
is spoken by settlers in nearly every province and state of
India. The P
rs
s, whose adopted language it is, are enterprising merchants,
and most of the speakers outside Gujarat are of this nationality. In Madras
there is also a large colony of silk weavers who immigrated centuries ago from
Gujarat, many of whom still (see pp. 447 ff.) retain the language of their original
home.
The following are the figures for Gujart
in areas in which it is not
a vernacular. Most of them are taken from the tables of the Census of 1891,
but those for Kashmir, Rajputana, and Central India are only estimates, as no
language census was taken of these tracts in that year.
