Karina Firkaviciute

Karina Firkaviciute is the project representative for the Karaim community of Vilnius, Lithuania

Relevant competence: native speaker of Karaim, musicologist, researcher of Karaim liturgical music

Karina Firkaviciute graduated as a Master of Arts from the Lithuanian Academy of Music in 1995. For her thesis on "The liturgical chant of Lithuanian Karaims" she was awarded a grant from the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences.

A postgraduate student at the Lithuanian Academy of Music, she has also worked since 1997 at the Composers Union of Lithuania, and gives lectures on Oriental music at the Department of Oriental studies in the University of Vilnius.

She has participated at many conferences in Lithuania and abroad and has given talks on the following subjects:

  • 13th Symposium of Young Musicologists in Bratislava, Slovakia: "The liturgical chant of Lithuanian Karaims".
  • 39th Permanent International Altaistic Conference in Szeged, Hungary: "The songs and chant of Karaims".
  • International Conference on The situation in music culture of the independant Lithuania, in Vilnius, Lithuania: "Lithuanian discoveries: another music".
  • International Conference on Religious Music in Siauliai, Lithuania: "Some methods and problems of incestigation of liturgical monody".
Karina has worked as a journalist and published many scholarly articles as well as in Lithuanian newspapers and journals. Her publications include:
