NUBIAN FEMALES; KANOOSEE TRIBE.  PHILÆ

Philæ Island in the Nile is famous for the Temple of Isis, which is substantially intact from the Roman times. The women of the Kenuz ,sub-group of Nubians, who lived on this island, make their hair stiff with mutton-fat and let their numerous ringlets fall straight. The girl on the left wears several necklaces made of small stones, and the woman on the right wears a necklace made of many colorful beads. As seen in this lithograph, until the age 13 or 14, girls seemed to wear only thong-apron that covered the lower body.
