CAMELS RESTING IN THE SHERKIYEH. LAND OF GOSHEN, LOWER EGYPT

An Arab rests on his load that he has taken off the camel, and smokes his shbuq (pipe) in what is considered to be the land of Gōshen(Goshen), mentioned in the Genesis of the Old Testament. The land of Gōshen in Egypt is where the ancient Israeli prophet Joseph invited his father Jacob and brothers to live from the land of Canaan, and has long piqued the interest of Europeans. Today, it is accepted in academic circles that Gōshen was in the Sharqiyya(Sherkiyeh) region, in the east of the Nile Delta.
