Portrait of the Late George Lloyd

George Lloyd was a Welsh who worked as Prisse d'Avennes's assistant from 1841, and was the very person who suggested that the artist should design the works on this exhibition. At the young age of 28, Lloyd died in 1843 near Luxor when his rifle misfired. The Oriental Album was dedicated to him. Although this lithograph is often considered a portrait of an Arab, it is in fact a piece that the artist created in memory of Lloyd after traveling to Britain in collaboration with his school friend Adam Houston. This might the reason that the face is drawn in a somewhat different style in comparison with the rest of the piece. George Lloyd, whose father served in the army of the East India Company, is believed as his illegitimate son of an Indian mother, and this can be seen in this portrait. He wears Arab attire, holds a shīsha (water pipe) in his hand, carries a dagger at his waist, and leans against a saddle of dromedary.
