TheKalamkaariitradition is well-known in the South Indian state of Andhra Pradesh aswell as in the West Indian state of Gujarat. A special coarse cloth is chosen as thebase. It is treated with some vegetable dyes. The painting is also done by usingmostly vegetable dyes. Some of the paintings are drawn in free hand and some aredone by using wooden blocks and filling by hand. The Kalamkaariipaintings haveseveral themes. One of them is the theme of the famous epic RaamaayaNa. In thispainting from Andhra Pradesh, the whole story of RaamaayaNais depicted withthe central figure being that of Raama’s coronation. The word Kalamkaariiisordinarily spelt as kalamkari.(Photo by P. Bhaskararao: October 1998).
