[greetings]

We are pleased to announce that an exhibition entitled "The role ofacademic collaboration for Athabascan revitalization" will be held atthe Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa,Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. The exhibition deals with the efforts of various Athabascan communities to revitalize their languagesand cultures which are facing the imminent danger of being lost. We will also host an international conference, "The Role of intercommunication for Athabascan revitalization", at the opening of the exhibition.

Athabascan-speaking people spread in a wide area, including Alaska,
Canada, the southwestern U.S., and the Pacific Coast. The Athabascan
family in fact represents the largest group of Native American languages,
both in terms of geographic spread and the number of languages and
speakers. The family likewise exhibits great cultural and historical
diversity. In this exhibition we feature three groups of the Athabascans
-- those from Alaska, northwestern Canada and the southwestern U.S.

Under the pressure of the dominant European languages and cultures,
the Athabascan people, like other groups of Native Americans, are in a
constant struggle to maintain their distinctive sociocultural structure
and native languages and to pass them on to future generations. This
project was planned with a hope that our academic research would make
meaningful contribution to the revitalization effort of the Athabascan
people.

This is a rare opportunity to learn about these cultures and their
present situations, so please join us!
